There are certain inherited forms of hemiplegic migraine, such as familial hemiplegic migraine, which has a huge genetic factor to it. This is also known as hemiplegic migraine. In rare cases, you might experience weakness in your limbs. It is important to see a doctor when that happens, because this can feel similar with symptoms of other conditions, such as stroke etc. Sometimes, this numbness can be experienced across your face. You may also experience numbness across your arm for a few minutes. Some common symptoms of sensory aura involve tingling sensation in one limb. What does sensory migraine aura feel like? This usually accompanies blindness as well. Often, these colors appear in circular zig-zag linesģ) Olfactory migraine aura – either smelling things that aren’t there or a heightened sense of smellĥ) Blindness: About 75-80% of people who experience aura experience blindnessĦ) A visual “fuzz”, like a blank TV channel fuzz. Here are some other symptoms of what migraine aura can look like:ġ) Blind spots especially when they are trying to readĢ) Bright light flashes or streaks of color. This aura may begin as a small opening of light and then progress into bright geometric lines and shapes in one’s visual field. The most familiar form of visual aura is referred to as a fortification spectrum due to its resemblance to the walls of a medieval fortress. What does visual migraine aura look like? This wave’s propagation may result in visual hallucinations. Migraine aura feels like an electrical or chemical wave that travels through the visual cortex of the brain, which is responsible for processing visual signals. However, aura can also involve sensory or olfactory disturbances as well. The most common symptoms of migraine aura are visual disturbances. A migraine aura can last up to an hour before the actual headache. Just like an alarm that signals trouble, migraine aura acts as a “natural alert” that lets you know a migraine attack is about to hit. Around 20-25% of the time, people experience a migraine aura before the “acute” phase, or a migraine attack. We usually reserve treatment for those patients who have symptoms regularly and it interferes with daily living because the medications used to treat migraine can have side effects, just like any medication.Migraine aura is one of the stages of a migraine attack. Treatment is usually started in consultation with an internist, family physician, or neurologist. In the rare instance that these symptoms continue to recur on a regular basis and interfere with one’s quality of life, then treatment is available with pills that both decrease the frequency of attacks as well the severity of the attacks. An examination of the eye is important to rule out any other causes for these symptoms. Usually, this resolves without treatment and many people never have another episode. ![]() The cause is due to a temporary spasm in the blood vessels behind the eye called “vasospasm” similar to a spasm or cramp that you may have once experienced in one of your leg muscles (Charlie-Horse). Some people get the visual symptoms without the headache. Some people get migraine headaches without the visual symptoms. This is called migraine headache with visual prodrome. Sometimes, there can be a headache after the visual symptoms resolve. Medical treatment is usually not necessary. Often, rest in a darkened room can be helpful during a migraine attack. These symptoms usually resolve spontaneously after several minutes but usually less than one hour. These bright lines may have associated flashing light sensations and sometimes can interfere with vision. ![]() Patients usually experience visual symptoms of seeing bright zig-zag type lines in their central or peripheral (side) vision. ![]()
